Sunday night’s VMAs left us in SHOCK. Epic duels, incredible live music, heart warming tears and Kanye for President? Here’s a breakdown of what happened:

1. Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj kicked off the show with a surprise duo

After much hype and speculation about the recent Twitter feud between Taylor and Nicki, the gals deemed up for a surprise opening number, reminding us why we love the VMAs!

2. Nicki then let us know, she isn’t a fan of Miley.

I’ve watched many an award show, and I can’t think of a time when a performer called out the host of a show on a feud there were having on live TV. Staged or not, it sure got the Twitterverse talking. Miley handled it well, but the cameras were quick to move on to the next segment of the show.

3. Demi Lovato slayed the World.

I mean…. come on…. that was a KILLER performance! Enough to forget that random moment Iggy appeared on stage like a gust of wind and people asked “why is she there?”.  YOU GO, DEMI!

4. But then The Weeknd STOLE the show!

Song stuck in your head? Because it’s not about to leave. This just proves that live music is always the best. The Weeknd was the act we were all waiting for and he didn’t leave us disappointed. at. all. I still can’t feel my face from my jaw hitting the ground!

5. Miley tried to recreate the most infamous selfie in history

And bless her heart, she only got a blurred one… at least Kim Kardashian was in it… right? O_o Not quite the same as Ellen’s ultimate Oscars selfie that shut down the internet, but a nice try, M.

6. Justin Bieber made his come-back….and cried

Biebs did a mashup of his latest singles, “Where are you now?” and “What do you mean?”– which has left me to ponder will all of his songs on his next album have a question as a title? What everyone is talking about, of course, is the moment after JB randomly took off into the air for a Neo-like moment and landed in tears back on the stage. I still think something went wrong and he thought he was going to fall to his death, but then again, perhaps he was just ecstatic that he made it through his first live performance in a few years.

7. Taylor Swift ended a six year “feud” with Kanye West

And even made reference to that time Kanye tried to steal her moment and give her Moonman to Beyoncé, who was equally mortified. The exchange was cute, yet short lived, because then Kanye got the mic…Taylor Swift presents the Video Vanguard Award to Kanye West at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles, California, August 30, 2015. 8. Kanye talked a lot and the world was confused.

There was a rant about music awards, his dislike for the process, something to the effect of “I don’t even understand awards”, (I’m pretty sure he’s still trying to get Beyoncé another Moonman), and he even told the world he smoked a little ‘green’ before coming on the stage. Twitter exploded with confusion about what Kanye was even saying.

9. Then Kanye announced that he’s running for President in 2020

I mean… what? WHAT!?! There are no words.

10. And to wrap up the night, Miley performed something and announced her new album.

But nobody really cared.

That poor girl paraded around the stage in a collection of offensive costumes, desperately trying to steal the show, but couldn’t. The show was THAT good –and she was hardly wearing anything for most of it. Take note, future hosts – the viewers enjoy good content, not some chick-gone-wild.

It just goes to show you, when the talent is real and the music makes you dance, there’s no need to attempt any PR stunts or try so hard. Sometimes, the music just needs to live and be heard.

Here’s to next year’s awards — the bar has been raised! I mean, even Kanye danced!
