For those of you who have been wondering what is up with The Rusty Gull the last 6 months, we’re happy to indulge. Staying in the family, the old tavern is taking on a complete face lift, both physically and internally, to become a new concept with a tighter name, The Gull Bar + Kitchen. We recently caught up with Phil Tapping & Colin Vyner, to get the scoop on what’s in store.

The Gull is a West Coast eatery and bar with a focus on fresh and local ingredients. The kitchen will feature an approachable family style dining experience and the majority of the food served will be house made. The kitchen will be run by Colin (right), a North Van local and previous chef of Baldface Lodge in Nelson. The menu will have a strong West Coast presence, as well as featuring staples such as a house ground burger….yum.  Specials will run weekly as they plan to stick to seasonal items that are available and will strive to source local and sustainable items.

The bar program will be run by Phil (left), a veteran of 8 years behind the bar at Blue Water Café. The bar will feature an option for everyone. Cocktails will focus on light and refreshing sippers using only fresh juices and quality ingredients. The wine list will feature 20 whites and 15 reds focusing on West Coast and old-world options, with BC to play a predominant role on the list.  Wine styles will vary throughout the list and there will be selections for every palate.

BC craft beer will play a strong role in the tap selection (six mainstay beers with four rotating taps monthly).  Seasonal brews will make up the rotating list and mainstays will consist of local favourites.

With both Phil and Colin being born and raised on the North Shore, they want to embrace the locals with a non-pretentious approach with great food and great drinks. The space has been completely gutted and being rebuilt from the studs up with drastic changes being made to the floor plan to make the room feel larger and brighter. They plan to keep the décor as nautical, and pay homage to the booming shipyard past with subtle hints of the old rusty gull still kept.

In our opinion, Lower Lonsdale has the potential to become inundated with big chains. It’s important to support these local, independent establishments to keep our hood from becoming another generic, geek spot. We’ll be welcoming The Gull with open arms Spring 2018.
