One of the places I love in Lower Lonsdale is the Community Gardens, just off St. Georges between 2nd and 1st. A short walk from my door, this communal garden has a cornucopia of earthy treasures that delight the eye. Wandering along the narrow paths between the plots, the intricate beauty of nature snags my eye, presenting an ever-changing pageantry of plant life.

An iris bobs back-and-forth in the morning breeze, the deep blue of its petals showing an open mouth from which a furry yellow tongue protrudes…

I am constantly amazed and delighted by life on a finer scale. The closer you get, the more detail seems to be revealed, almost as if one is descending deeper and deeper into a fractal image…

The soft, pale pink petals of a lily are stained by the intense cadmium yellow of the plant’s pollen, inadvertently left by a visiting bumblebee brushing against its anthers…
