If you’ve been lurking around the shipyards the last few months, you’ve probably seen the Pipe Shop undergoing some construction. The building, that dodged having to become a museum last year, has been getting a face lift to enhance the experience for the plethora of events scheduled to take place at the historic venue this year, and years to come.

A little piece of history

For those of you who have been living in a deep dark hole, the Pipe Shop is 9,000 square feet of open concept event space available for weddings, corporate events, trade shows, conferences, and private parties. Once known as the Pipefitters Building (originally built in the 1940s), it commemorates the thousands of men and women who worked in the area from 1906-1992. Over 450 ships were launched from this site during the many years of operation including merchant marine vessels and victor ships. The exposed wooden beams are original and have never been touched.

So what exactly did they do?

The City of North Vancouver and Quay Property Management selected Proscenium Architecture & Interiors inc. and Novacom Building Partners Ltd. to complete the Pipe Shop venue’s capital improvements project in which construction began January 2017 and came to completion last week, Friday April 7.

The scope of work included was:

  • Repair and paint (white walls) of existing drywall surfaces to entire venue.
  • Installation of new washrooms, and installation of new open concept “servery” kitchen, the food preparation area.
  • Domestic hot water, passive ventilation with the installation of 4 ceiling fans.
  • New full height (23 ft) feature wall for A/V projections with frame. A 16″ x 9″ opening cut into the wall (frame) complete with lighting tucked in behind to allow for better ambiance later at night.

We’re pretty stoked they included lavatories in this improvement plan as it was previously, one of the venues biggest pitfalls.
