Lonsdale Quay Market is celebrating their 30th Anniversary in April of next year! To celebrate the milestone they’re currently planning the following NEW community-focused attractions:
- a NEW community art piece
- special space in the Market for non-profit groups and small businesses to use
- a full-service community kitchen for chef demos and other culinary education ventures
For the past thirty years Lonsdale Quay Market has been a staple in providing opportunities for the community. The diverse and colourful marketplace strives to provide opportunities for youth involvement, and to be an advocate for all-round community growth. The Market is also a prominent and proud supporter of local arts programs.
Here are some of Lonsdale Quay Market’s current community & art projects:
North Shore Culture Days: An opportunity for youth performers to share their talents in front of a public space. A chance to explain their creative process and gain experience performing.
Market Host Program: Providing opportunities for youth employment. Gain professional references, experience in a Market with direct event and tourism experience.
Saturday Farmers Market: Supporting locally grown, made and baked products.
Studio in the City: The Market partnered with the program, which works to provide employment opportunities for youth, valuable education in applied arts under local mentorship, and opportunities to be part of lasting legacy with permanent art installations.
The fountain: The art pieces is called White Winds, by well-known Canadian sculptor Gerald Gladstone (now deceased). The sculpture represents sail forms leaning into the wind and the fountain represents plumes of moving water beneath the sails.
The mural “Coastal Energy”: The 100 foot wall mural was designed by students in collaboration with local artist, Dennis Creighton. ‘Coastal Energy’, a new 100-foot long wall mural designed by local student artists, and painted by mural artist Dennis Creighton.
