About a month ago my friend texted me three little words: Skate skiing tonight? My response, of course, was “Sure, but WTF is skate skiing?” I have since discovered a world of magic… and what I can easily see becoming a new North Shore winter obsession. I say this despite the fact that I am an absolutely atrocious skate skier.
So what is it? It’s like skating on skis. You use skis slightly shorter than those used in classic cross country, the poles are longer, and you move in a skating motion (think deep V) instead of back and forth. It’s fun, it’s fast, and it’s surprisingly satisfying when you get in one or two good glides as a beginner. It also looks incredibly graceful when done well, which after three skate ski clinics I can confirm is not easy.
Skate skiing is reasonably priced when compared to downhill skiing or boarding, an amazing workout, and you can still get some impressive speed. Have I mentioned night skiing, where the views are stunning and the trails virtually empty? Time to head up to Cypress and check out the Nordic terrain – you won’t regret it.
